Our First Science Activity

In science we talked about how important it is for scientists to communicate with one another.

We did our own little experiment to see just how difficult that can be sometimes.

Partners were given building blocks and a folder. One partner was to build a structure, and then teach the other partner how to build it. The trick was, partners were not able to see the built structure at any time.

Everyone agreed that it was easier said, than done.

It was great to see partners working together.

Some of us came up with some really fun structures. This friend built a top that actually spins!

In the end everyone had a great time working together!

Room 43 Face Times

We have been working on building our writing stamina in room 43, and learning about the different things we can write about in our Writer's Notebook. Today, we found out that third grade students are not the only ones who keep Writer's Notebooks, adults do too.

Ms. Alewel graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2013 with a degree in journalism. We learned that she has written a variety of published pieces for multiple magazine and newspapers. Ms. Alewel has worked for magazines like Vox, Alive, Marie Clare, and she is currently working for Rachel Ray magazine in NYC.

Ms. Alewel has kept a Writer's Notebook (which she calls her journal) since she was in fourth grade, and yes she still has all her old notebooks. She writes almost daily about anything that comes to her mind. She said that she writes when she has to make a big decision, when she is upset, and when she is happy.

When asked what Ms. Alewel writes about, she told us she does everything from doodling, writing small blurbs about life, to reflecting on her day. Ms. Alewel then explained that her favorite place to write is under a tree in Central Park.

It was clear that the students were thrilled to talk with a published author, and were excited to learn about her stories. The were eager to get started writing in their own notebooks. Some students even brought their notebooks to lunch!

Homework 8/23

This Week in Third Grade 8/19...

GReading: The students are beginning to work on building their reading stamina. We are going to be practicing reading for longer periods of time every day in order to become better readers.

Writing: The students are so excited to have the opportunity to write in their newly decorated Writer's Notebooks. They have the opportunity to write about ANYTHING they would like.

Spelling: We took our Word's Their Way pretest on Monday, and it looks like we have a group of great spellers! We will begin learning about how the Spelling rotations work later this week.

Science: Lindbergh is now using a new science curriculum this year, and it looks awesome! The students looked through their text books today, and are just as excited!

Social Studies: We are focusing on learning about communities this week, and that communities look different depending upon your location.

Wednesday Folders:  Students will be receiving their Wednesday folder tomorrow. Inside there will be a list of character traits stapled to the left side of the folder. This will be my way of getting any information across to you about how your student is behaving in class. Please initial this for me, and return it to school on Thursday.

Please come to Curriculum Night on August 29. You will receive important information about what to expect this year in third grade.

Post-it Note Problem Solving

Our third grade class has been complimented quite a bit over the past few days. Together we decided that we would have a "compliment jar" in order to motivate us to keep up the good work. I brought in a pickle jar,bag of pinto beans, and red kidney beans. When the students walked in this morning I asked them which type of bean they thought we should use and why.

Our answers varied depending upon personal preference, and what they thought would be best. Here are a few of our answers:

I pointed these ones out, and asked the students to talk with their neighbor for a minute. After meeting back with the whole group, the class decided to use the red kidney beans. They determined that the bigger the bean, the less they would need to get a reward.

Shortly after this was determined, we decided that after we reach our goal this time, we will use the pinto beans to give us a bigger challenge.

We have seven beans so far!

8/19 Homework

Reading: Read for five minutes. Practice "What's in the Sack?"

Writing: Decorate your Writer's Notebook if you would like
