Wow! I cannot believe that it is almost the end of April! It seems like each week flies by faster and faster. We have a lot of fun things planned for May, so be sure to stay on the lookout for what's coming up this month.
Here's a look at what is going on in third grade this week:
MAP Testing: I am so impressed by all of the hard work and effort all of my third graders have been putting towards MAP testing. We finished the math portion of the test, and we are moving on to the Communication Arts section starting Tuesday. Please make sure to continue to support your students at home by providing a healthy breakfast and a good night's sleep each night.
As a reward for all of our hard work, this Friday the third graders will have the opportunity to choose from a few different movies to watch in one of the third grade classrooms. The third grade teachers will provide students with pizza, drinks, and snacks. We will be using the left over MAP testing snacks for this party. If you would like to donate money for our pizza party it would be much appreciated. The third grade teachers will be paying for this out of pocket.
Reading: We are finishing up our unit on poetry and starting to read fairytales this week!
Writing: What a fantastic group of young poets I have! Once again, I am SO impressed by the hard work that the class has been putting towards writing poetry. We will be focusing on haikus this week, and painting our favorite poems with watercolors!
Math: We are going to return to fractions this week!

This Week in Third Grade 4/21
I hope everyone had a fantastic three day weekend! This week is our first week of MAP testing, so we will have a different schedule than usual. Here's a look at what is going on in our classroom this week in third grade:
Reading/ Writing: We are going to start focusing on poetry! We will be reading and writing poetry throughout the week as a fun way to take a break from MAP testing.
Math: We will continue reviewing previously learned concepts as well as talk about fractions this week.
Cursive: Yes! The time has come, your student will be introduced to cursive handwriting this week and next week. :)
Other Fun Things:
We will be MAP testing Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week. Thank you to everyone who wrote letters for their students to show their support. I also wanted to thank everyone who sent snacks in for our class to eat during our testing window.
Some ways you can help your student:
-Make sure your student is present during MAP testing.
-Please remember to let your students have a good breakfast each morning Breakfast at Sappington will be a reduced rate each morning.
-A good night sleep each night
- Encourage your student to try their best. I remind students that I KNOW that EVERYONE in our class can rock this test. The only thing that could possibly keep them from this is not trying.
THIS FRIDAY IS SPRING FLING! Come on out for pizza and activites this Friday for Spring Fling. My dad will be there with all of our critters. :)
Wednesday is an Early Release day! Please make sure your student knows how they will be getting home.
The Book Fair is taking place this week in the Sappington Library. Students are allowed to go buy books every day this week.
Friday we will have a Read-a-Thon during our afternoon.

This Week in Third Grade 4/14
I have had a lot of parents ask me about what I will be doing next year. On Thursday night I was approved by the Board of Education and I will be hired on to work at Sappington in third grade again next year! Thank you to everyone who has been keeping me in their thoughts while I went through the application process. It is so great to know that I have such a supportive group of parents who care. Thank you!
I hope that everyone had the opportunity to get outside and play a little bit this weekend. The weather was beautiful and it is clear that Spring Fever has officially set over our third graders. Unfortunately, it looks as if the weather is going to be back in the 40s and 50s over the next couple of days. With the weather varying like it always does in Saint Louis, our classroom's temperature changes as well. Dressing your students in layers is helpful during weeks like these.
Here's a Look at What's Happening This Week in Third Grade:
Reading: This week we will continue to read some shorter passages and work on our Close Reading skills, and we will focus on RAPing our constructed response answers.
Math: We will continue to learn about fractions and review some of the skills that we had learned earlier this year!
Writing: We are going back and looking at what makes our favorite personal narratives so great.
Science: We will continue measuring this week! We are really focusing in on the metric system.
Other:
MAP testing starts for us next week! Thank you to all of the parents that have donated snacks for us to use during MAP testing. If you haven't donated and you would like to, please send snack food items to school with your student sometime this week.
I will be sending home a small packet on Monday with some tips and information on MAP testing. Please make sure to look through it sometime this week.
On Friday, I sent home our field trip permission slip for the Zoo on May 28. THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM THE SUSON PARK FIELD TRIP WE WILL BE TAKING WITH OUR KINDERGARTEN BUDDIES ON MAY 22. Please sign it and send it back with your student as soon as you can.
On May 9, we will have Writer's Day! We will have a few different authors come to our school to talk with us. Last week, I sent home an order form with some of the books that the authors have written. If you would like to order one of these books/ have your book autographed by the author, please return the sheet by Thursday this week.
