This Week in Third Grade 5/27

Welcome back to the last week of school! I hope everyone had a wonderful three day weekend. It was good to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather Sunday and Monday! We only have a couple more days of school left, but we have a lot ot accomplish still. Here is a look at what we are doing this week in third grade:

Writing: We will finish typing our adapted fairy tales - the kids have done such a great job in their writing/ typing. We will celebrate our writing this week!

Reading: We will be finishing up books we have started in guided reading groups and celebrate how far we have come this year. *SUMMER reading has already started through the county library. It's free, and you get prizes- just for reading! I highly recommend the students participate in this so they do not regress over the summer!

Math: We will continue practicing facts for those who have not mastered them yet. For those who have shown mastery, we will continue to practice multi-digit multiplication and start long division. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR STUDENT IS PRACTICING THEIR FACTS OVER THE SUMMER!

Science: We will finish exploring matter. Last week we experimented with the different states of matter with our root beer floats- ask the kids what states of matter each part of the float represented! :)

Social Studies: We will finish presenting our google presentations about places in St. Louis the students studied. These presentations will be shared on everyone's google drives.

There will be no homework this week due to the crazy schedule and not having many days at school this week. Just because it's not assigned, please keep reading, writing, and practicing math!

I will be sending home a school activities/summer journal this week. I will also send a couple emails to you over the summer to check in with everyone. I encourage "my kids" to write to me too, they can email me this summer anytime - I'd love to hear from them!

This Week in Third Grade 5/18

Holy cow! I cannot believe that we only have two weeks left of school! Where has the time gone? We have a lot of fun activities planned for the end of the year! Here's a look at what's going on in room 43 this week:

Writing: We are coming to the end of our fairy tale unit. I am hoping to have all of our fairy tales finished by the end of this week, so that we can celebrate our writing one last time with a bang!

Reading: Similarly to writing, we are going to finish up reading fairy tales this week.

Math: As we finish up learning about adding and subtracting fractions, I plan to assess students by having a small quiz on Wednesday. We will then end the year by doing some fun review games. It is crucial that students are practicing their multiplication facts at home throughout the summer.

Science: We had a blast studying "Ooobleck" on Friday and learning about the different properties of solids, liquids, and gases. As we move to this week we will continue to explore these three states of matter.

Social Studies: We are finishing up our unit on St. Louis this week. I hope to have all students give their presentations on Tuesday afternoon. We will continue to learn about the history of St. Louis, and quiz earlier next week.

Other: As it is the end of the year students will slowly start bringing home their belongings. If you wouldn't mind checking to make sure that all of my books/ the library's books are returned that would be fantastic.

Thursday: We will have our buddy field trip on Thursday afternoon. I emailed the parent volunteers on May 6 to make sure that they were going to make the new time. If you received an email and haven't responded, please let me know if you are going to make it. Our class is thrilled to spend time with their buddies again this week! :)

Friday: We will have a school wide Read-a-Thon. Everyone in the building will stop what they are doing and read for pleasure! Earlier this year, our third graders invited Mrs. Moehlmann into our classroom and persuaded her to let us do this. I am so proud of everything that we have accomplished this year, it goes to show that nine years really can make a difference! :)

We have no school on Monday May 26

We will have Cultural Day on May 27

Our zoo field trip is on May 28!

Fly up day (our last day) is on May 30

Being in Third Grade is a Fairytale!

We are adapting fairytales with our partners this week! We found that by changing a character, the scene, or a character's motivation we are able to make our stories more interesting! Here's a look at us  collaborating!

This Week in Third Grade 5/4

Thank you so much to everyone who donated money for our MAP testing pizza party! Thanks to you, the third grade teachers ended up not having to pay any money out of pocket! We appreciate your generosity, and I your support!

MAP testing is over! We survived, and we are moving to bigger and better things! I am looking forward to a fun and exciting (and normal) week of school!  Here's a look at what's happening this week in third grade:

Reading: We are finishing our poetry unit and moving along to focus on fairy tales. Specifically, students will be able to look into multiple versions of Fairy Tales and discuss their similarities and differences. We will also talk about what characteristics a text must have in order to fit in the fairy tale genre.

Writing: Going along with our reading, students will have the opportunity to adapt a classic fairy tale to create their own version.

Math: We are picking up where we left off learning about fractions. This week we will review equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and talk about mixed numbers.

Science: We will begin learning about matter this week! Students will have the opportunity to look at the different stages of matter and define the properties that go along with each stage.

Social Studies: We will begin this week learning a little history of Saint Louis! Students will create presentations about a specific location within the St. Louis area and present early next week!
