LGB!

Yesterday was Blues Spirit Day at Sappington Elementary! Boy were we excited to show off our love of the Blues! We have a ton of hockey fans in room 43, so it was definitely one of our favorite spirit days so far this school year. Here's a look at our fun attire!

Always time for a silly picture:

It's always a good time in room 43!

What kind of Blues Spirit Day would it be without an Ameren UE Power Play dance??

Disability Awareness Day!

We was ability awareness day at Sappington. Third and fourth grade students had the opportunity to talk with different individuals who either have a disability or represent an organization that help people with specific disabilities. Here's a look at what we did:
We talked to some representatives from Paraquad about different types of disabilities. We learn about physical, intellectual, and learning disabilities.

Steve showed us some of his tools that help him with everyday activities. One of our favorite things he shared with us was the type of cushion that he uses with his wheel chair. We learned that this is a special cushion that helps blood circulation. He even let a few of us try it out!

We also learned about what resources are available for people with visual and hearing impairments! We had the opportunity to read Braille, and write our own names in Braille. We used Easter egg cartons to help determine the alphabet.

Some of us had the opportunity to even make real Braille by poking a piece of think paper with a special tool.

Overall we had a fantastic day of learning!

This Week in Third Grade 1/27

I hope that everyone was able to enjoy the beautiful weather Sunday. Unfortunately, it looks as if it is going to be chilly this week! Please make sure that your students are bundled up. I am hoping that we will be able to go outside at least once this week for outdoor recess!

Here's a look at what we are doing in room 43 this week!

Reading: We will be focusing on close reading this week in third grade. Close reading is a skill that students can use when they come across difficult texts. Students are encouraged to go back and reread text and really stop to think about the content within the text.

There will be no reading response journals due this week.

Writing: We are learning about writing to prompts. We are talking about when prompts are used, and how to identify what we need to do to write for different prompts.

Math: This week in math, we will continue to practice a variety of multiplication strategies. We will begin learning division this week as well.

Students are asked to practice memorizing their multiplication facts every night. Please continue to fill out your students' multiplication log in place of their homework.

Dr. Hamby and the third grade teachers sat down last week and talked about reviewing previous taught concepts during second semester. Every Friday, students will be given an assignment sheet that will not be due until the following Friday. Students were given their first assignment on Friday 1/24, it will not be due until Friday January 31.

Science: We will continue to learn about different ecosystems this week. We will talk about producers, consumers, and decomposers as well!

Social Studies: In social studies, we are beginning to talk about money and the economy. Students were given a permission slip on Friday to let you know that they will be participating in Economics Day on March 14. Students will be selling their products that they made at home to other third graders with the fake money that we will be providing. Please make sure you read through the letter and sign it to let me know that you are aware of the project.

Other:
Today is an A Day.

Tuesday is Blue's Day! Students are encouraged to wear their favorite Blues attire in order to support our favorite hockey team!!

Tuesday is also Ability Awareness Day. Students will be rotating from to room to room to listen to different speakers and talk about different disabilities.

This Week in Third Grade 1/13

Welcome back everyone! It is so good to be back at school, and to get in the swing of things. I hope that everyone had a fantastic break and a wonderful weekend. Here's a look at what we are going to be learning this week in third grade.

Reading: We are finishing up our nonfiction unit in both reading and writing. Book clubs will begin again this week, and students are still expected to read every night for at least 15 minutes. Please continue to sign your student's planner next to the book they have read. This will count as part of their reading grade. We are starting Reading Response Journals again this week. It is a red week.

Writing: We will be publishing our nonfiction pieces this week. Students will be publishing their writing in REAL books (thanks to the Dollar Section at Target and all of the great gift cards I received for Christmas)!

Math: Everyone is doing a fantastic job developing an understanding for multiplication. I have given every student a small bag where they can keep multiplication flash cards. We will be taking quizzes daily over the facts that we have introduced. To prepare for these quizzes, I am going to ask that your student practices every night for fifteen minutes. There are a ton of great Apps for your smart phone and tablets. There are also a lot of great websites that students can use to practice. However, if you have none of those available they can always practice using good old fashioned flash cards! I will be sending home a practice log for students to keep track of their practice as well as a letter home about practicing. Please sign it and have your student return it to school tomorrow.

Science: We wil continue learning about ecosystems this week in science!

Social Studies: We are going to begin learning about economics this week.

Other: We are starting to get low on post-it notes and snack quart size ziplock bags. If you have any extra laying around the house they you are not using, they would be greatly appreciated in room 43. :)

Friday is movie night at Sappington! Monster's University will be playing! Everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite jammies to watch the movie.

Wednesday is an early dismissal day. Please make sure your student knows how they are getting home.
