Math Stations

We are having a blast at our math stations this week! 

At station one, we are gathering data from a poll we have outside our classroom door! Over the last few weeks we have asked students to tell us their favorite Olympic sport! Students used the data to make a bar graph!

At station two students are having a ball playing multiplication games online!

Station four students love play multiplication Jenga! 

Station five is a crowd favorite! We love working on our spatial reasoning skills and counting up the area we are conqueroring while playing Blokus!

This Week in Third Grade 2/24

Reading: This week we will be focusing on determining importance. Students will begin new literature circles this week, and we will continue to stress the importance of being prepared for discussion. 

Writing: Our writers are changing the world this week! We are working hard on our persuasive writing unit. Specifically, we will focus on looking at our audience and figuring out ways to get them to agree with us. We will gather information, facts, and think about questions our readers might have to ask us.

Math: This week we will be finishing up our geometry unit. We will look at solid figures as well as perimeter and area! 
Students should continue to fill out their multiplication log. Assignment 4 will be due on Friday.

Social Studies: We will continue to work on our business plans for Economics Day. This week we will be focusing on advertising and how to persuade others to buy our products.

Science: We are wrapping up our weather and water cycle unit. We will start our space unit on Wednesday! 


Other:

You will receive a note today about conferences. If you receive a PINK paper please make sure that you return it as soon as you can so we can schedule your conference. If you receive a GREEN paper, and you feel that a conference is necessary fill it out and have your student return it to school. 


Pennies for Pasta Spirit Week: 

Wednesday Feb. 26 – Green day. Wear as much green as you can and bring inpennies. See if everyone and your class can come in wearing green.

This Week in Third Grade 2/18-2/21

Reading: 
This week in reading we are still working on questioning while we read. We will begin summarizing next week.

Writing: 
We are starting our persuasive unit. Students will be looking at different ways they can change the world around them. Some students will focus on changing things within their own community, and some might expand out to changing things in their world.

Math: 
We are going to be reviewing the next couple of days for our geometry test on Friday.
Our fact sheet will be due on Friday. Please make sure your students are practicing their facts.
We will have no Hamby Homework this week. It was not passed out on Valentines Day, and I want to make sure that students are given a whole week to complete it.

Science: 
We are still learning about the water cycle! We are zooming in to focus specifically on condensation, and all of the different types of clouds that can be formed.

Social Studies: 
We are continuing our economics unit. Students are asked to have an idea of what they would like to do for their business on Economics Day by the middle of the week. We will begin our business plans on Wednesday, and they will be due by Friday. We will do most of our business plan at school.

Third graders will have the opportunity to meet the strings teachers, and talk to them about potentially being a part of strings next year.
 PRISM night is in the gym from 4-6 PM. My dad will be there with all of our critters!

Parent Teacher Conferences are on March 6 from 4:00-7:30 PM. Not every student will have a conference.  I will be contacting you within the next week if I would like to conference with you about your child. NOT ALL PARENTS WILL BE CONTACTED. 

Friday March 7 is a half day of school. Please make sure your child is aware of how they are going to get home.

March 8 is SPTG Trivia Night!

This Week in Third Grade

Reading: 
We will be focusing on questioning this week while we are reading. There will be no reading response journals due this week.

Writing: 
We are going to begin our unit on persuasive writing this week!

Math: 
We will continue to learn about geometry. We are focusing on different ways we can categorize triangles, quadrilaterals, and more!

Fact Practice: I am asking that the students practice their multiplication facts for 5 out of the 7 days of the week. I will check their logs every Friday to make sure that they have been practicing. If your student practices more than 5 days out of the week, they do not write it down. For the sake of grading, your student's week begins on Friday and ends Thursday.


Social Studies:
We are moving forward in our economics unit. We have started talking about how companies advertise their products, and we are going to be working on creating a business plan sometime this week.

Science: 
We are moving forward in our discussion about the water cycle. Students will look into the different types of clouds and forms of precipitation.


Other: 

Tuesday: Fine Arts Night is going to be in the cafeteria at 6:30 PM.

Wednesday: We have an early dismissal at 1:40 PM. Please make sure that your student is aware of how they will be getting home.

Thursday: Dress like a Teacher Day!

 On Thursday if 3rd-5th bring in their JRFH donation envelope or donations they receive a sticker. For K-5 can bring in any donation for a sticker.  If anyone donates $5 or more they receive a duck.  Students do not need to bring in a donation to dress like a teacher.  If a child brings in a donation they are not required to dress up-these are common questions from the students. Donations/envelopes can be brought in before Thursday.

This Week in Third Grade 2/3- 2/7

I apologize for not posting this sooner. I forgot to hit post when I wrote it Monday morning. Here's a look at what is going on this week in third grade. 

Reading: Students will continue to learn about their metacognition, and how monitoring themselves while reading can improve comprehension.

Writing: We will continue to work on writing to prompts. After we finish this unit, we will begin working on our persuasive unit.

Math: Students are really starting develop a strong understanding of multiplication and division. We are going to continue to encourage multiplication practice everyday. I will send a new multiplication log home this week. I am going to ask that students work on practicing their multiplication at least 5-10 minutes a day.

Science: We will begin to learn about the water cycle this week!

Social Studies:We are moving forward in our economics unit. We will have test over chapter 9 on Wednesday. We will begin focusing on producers, consumers, supply and demand on Thursday. Next week we will work on our business plan for Economics Day. Students will be expected to tell me what product they would like to sell by February 12. 

Other: 

Tuesday: Fine Arts Night in the Cafeteria at 6:45 PM.

School Counselor Day is on Thursday and Friday this week. We will celebrate Mrs. Toomay on Thursday and Mrs. Scott on Friday.

Flyers Fitness- On Monday's, Wednesday's, and Friday's  students are invited to participate in Flyer's Fitness in the gym from 7:30 AM- 8:15 AM. The program has just opened up for third graders in the past week. I will be there every Monday and Wednesday morning. 
 Our amazing Flyers Fitness is a program emphasizing cardio, strength and core exercises, and yoga that runs before school 3 mornings a week. This program supports student engagement, community building, and physical wellness. Your funds will support volunteer teachers who are in need of supplies to lead the exercise activities.

As a parent resource in the lobby, we are adding several titles to book shelves about topics of interest such as ADHD, anxiety, stress, parenting tips, divorce, and learning disabilities. Our goal with this space is to encourage parents to read and to provide you with resources that may be of value when struggling with various issues. We are calling this READbox because we want to encourage staff and parents to borrow and return these materials as you need.
