This Week in Third Grade 8/17

Hi all! Tomorrow we start our first full week of school! This week we will slowly start diving into the curriculum while we continue to build our classroom community and focus on our procedures.  Here's a look at what's going on in Room 40:

Reading: We will begin working on building up our reading stamina. This week we will gradually increase the amount of time we spend independently reading everyday. On top of that, we will also focus on choosing "Just Right Books" and learn about our classroom library.

Writing: On Friday, I introduced students to their Writer's Notebook. Students were told that they could decorate their notebooks anyway they choose, and use these notebooks to write anything they would like. They will be asked to write in their notebooks every night this year.  I will go into further detail on Thursday night.

Math: This week we will begin our first math centers. These centers will be made up of previously learned concepts.

Science: We will jump into science slowly this week, starting out by discussing what scientists do.

Social Studies: Like scientists, we will start implementing social studies slowly. Our first chapter focuses on communities. We will continue to build our classroom community during this time period, in order to ensure that all students feel welcome in Room 40. This community building is crucial for student learning to occur during the rest of the school year.

Upcoming Events and Other News:
Curriculum Night is on Thursday evening from 6:30- 7:30 PM. I sent out an email earlier last week that said it was from 6:30-8:30 PM. There was a mix up on the calendar. I apologize for any confusion. I will use Curriculum Night to explain:

  • Communication
  • Classroom expectations and classroom management policies
  • Grading policy
  • Effort Rubric
  • Important Dates
  • General Overview of curriculum
  • BYOD
  • How to access the parent guides, our class blog,  and the virtual backpack
